We are honored to have supported the historical-cultural project of the “Marzocco” renovation, supporting the initiative together with “Bandierai degli Uffizi” (Uffizi Flag Throwers). La Marzocco has been invited to attend the unveiling of the Lion statue in Piazza Signoria, Florence, followed by the traditional flag throwing performances. The company’s CFO, Massimiliano Valenti, was there to unveil the newly restored work of art, the Florentine symbol, in the company of Antonio Marrone, the president of “Bandierai degli Uffizi”, Dario Nardella, the city’s Mayor, other national institutional representatives and journalists…
That of “Marzocco” is a fascinating story. Florence was consecrated, since the time of the Romans, to the god of war Mars whose name gradually evolved due to the popularization of the name, into “Marzocco”. With the advent of Christianity, the role of the defining city, traditionally attributed to “Marte”, was transformed into the heraldic symbol of the Lion, which became the iconographic symbol of the free republic of Florence and thus the name of “Marzocco”. La Marzocco bears its name from the heraldic lion, sculpted by Donatello in 1418-1420. The lion is seated and with one paw supports the coat-of-arms of Florence, “il giglio” (the lily).
