GS/3 F.A.Q.

Q My Machine arrived and I chose to install it before my distributor had a chance to perform the required set up procedures.

A: this espresso machine has many configurable parameters.  Your distributor can make sure that all of the settings
are correct for you prior to the delivery of your GS3.  If you elect to receive this machine prior to this process
you may be required to perform some additional set up procedures.
This machine is a very heavy duty espresso machine capable of performance equal to most commercial espresso machines.  Therefore the set up for this machine will also require some of the same processes.

The set up process is described in the Installation Guide that comes with the GS3.
You can check our website at any time to see if there are any up dates to the GS3 documentation.
In addition to the setup procedures listed in the Installation Guide, it may be necessary to perform the following adjustments:

Q My pump pressure will not rise to 9 bar.

A: there are two possible solutions to this question. The expansion valve is not set properly or the pump is not adjusted
for the current configuration of the machine.

To decide on the course of action please notice the pressure gauge of the coffee boiler
(this gauge should read between 0 bar to 12 bar). The gauge will fluctuate during the heating cycle of the coffee boiler.
If you have noticed the gauge rise to 9 bar or higher during these heating cycles then the solution will be to adjust
the pump pressure:

If you have not noticed the gauge rise to at least 9 bar then you will need to check the expansion valve first.
To check the expansion valve remove the drain grate (not the whole drain box, just the grate) then activate the brew process
by pressing button 1.
While water is exiting the group head please notice the expansion valve. If water is discharging in a stream
then you will need to adjust the expansion valve:

GS/3 - Adjusting the Expansion Valve

Initial Adjustment:
The expansion valve is shipped in the relaxed position to avoid any damage to the seals the inside this valve.
Since shipping conditions can vary (temperature, humidity, pressure, etc.) it is important that this valve remain in the open position during shipping.  To achieve the initial setting you must turn the expansion valve cover approximately 5 turns in the clockwise direction (looking from the bottom of the valve).  You may see a small mark in the outside of this cover.
Please align this mark so it is facing you.  As the machine heats up, please follow the Periodic Adjustment procedure.

Periodic Adjustment:
The expansion valve may need to be adjusted periodically. The pressure in the coffee boiler should never exceed 12 bar. Additionally the expansion valve should not be set too low or it will limit the maximum pressure delivered by the water pump. During the heating cycle the water inside the coffee boiler will expand. This expansion will cause an increase in pressure within the coffee boiler. The expansion valve limits the maximum pressure within the coffee boiler.
To adjust the expansion valve, rotate the expansion valve cover to adjust the pressure. Rotate clockwise to increase pressure,
and counterclockwise to decrease pressure.

NOTE: The expansion valve should only be adjusted during the heating cycle. This is best done when the machine is turned on after being off for at least 20 minutes.

GS/3 - Adjusting the Pump Pressure

The GS3 uses a differential pressure, rotary pump. The pump is adjusted so that the water pressure is approximately 9 bar.
To adjust the pressure you must first remove the left side cover. Once the side cover is removed, you will have access to the water pump adjustment screw. Loosen the adjustment screw lock nut and turn the adjustment screw clockwise to increase pressure or counterclockwise to reduce pressure.

Note: It is necessary to adjust the pump pressure when changing the configuration from a water reservoir
to a water supply system (or vice versa).

General F.A.Q.

Q How do I adjust the temperature of the tea water?

A: the GS3 is equipped with a temperature adjustment valve for the tea water.
You can access this adjustment knob by sliding your hand on the bottom edge of the right side panel toward the front
of the machine. You can see this knob if you look at the bottom right side panel.
Rotating the adjustment knob clockwise to increase temperature and counterclockwise to decrease temperature.

Q: How do you adjust the thermostat of the coffee boiler?
A: The adjustment screw is positioned under the cover (black); turn it clockwise to increase the temperature and anti-clockwise to reduce the temperature.

Q: How sensitive is the adjustment of the thermostat?
A: A complete rotation of the screw (360°) is the equivalent of 8-9 °C

Q: How is saturation of the groups performed?
A: This is best done with the machine turned off and with limited water pressure (usually the mains pipe pressure is sufficient). With the machine off, the coffee boiler can fill up with mains water. Above every brew group there is a bleed screw which is for releasing the air from inside the group. This operation should be performed one group at a time.

Q: What levels should be shown on the pressure gauge for the coffee machine to work correctly?
A: The steam pressure gauge should reach a maximum of 1.5 BAR. This makes an optimal flow of steam possible. The pressure gauge of the boiler should show 9 BAR when the pump is on; during normal functioning the pressure may vary from a minimum equal to the mains pressure, to a maximum of 12 BAR.

Q: How should the expansion valve in the drain box be adjusted?
A: While the coffee boiler is heating up you'll see the needle rise on the pressure gauge; when it gets to about 11 - 12 BAR turn the cap on the valve so that this maximum pressure is maintained on the pressure gauge. Turning it clockwise increases the pressure, anti-clockwise reduces it.

Q: If the expansion valve leaks water what should I do?
A: If the water leaks when the pressure is 11 - 12 BAR this is normal, otherwise the expansion valve will need to be adjusted.

Q: How can I prolong the life of the pump?
A: First of all by making sure that it is never turned on without water (even a few seconds may affect its reliability). It's also important that the water does not contain impurities which might make the pump seize up or cause noisy functioning.

Q: What should I do if the programmed doses are not constant?
A: First of all check the saturation of the groups; the flowmeter should also be checked for possible obstructions (in which case the impeller will not turn), or the flowmeter field sensor may not be functioning properly. Lastly, check the wire transmitting the signal from the keypad to the brain.

Q: What does a flashing LED while making coffee mean?
A: It means that either the coffee has been ground too finely or that the flowmeter is not working properly.
